How 'The Garden of Objects' Helps Us Design for the Future

This week a friend of mine texted me this: “do you know of any readings about gardens? can come from design or architecture. looking for theory about it. thought you might have a pulse on something!” I love the friendships where you might be separated across coasts but can instantly jump into any wonderful topic despite not being able to talk to each other everyday. But his question made me think of a class reading for my Experimental Form class when I was in my junior year of Product Design at Carnegie Mellon University. While most of my studio classes were focused on research methods, developing concepts, and cleverly meeting the projects many constraints meant to mimic the real world, this Experimental Form Studio class was more artistic; we were challenged to design things that could still have meaning and value despite lacking practical utility. The numerous projects we worked on were more sculptural than ‘product.’ It therefore was fitting we read this article in this class.
